Pinoy Journalism

Pinoy Journalism.heic

The Committee to Protect Journalists organization ranked the Philippines as the 2nd most dangerous country for journalists. As a Filipino myself, I wanted to highlight the journalism scene in my home country. The foam head is covered in newspaper headline clippings that document stories of journalists being harmed or harassed in any sort of way. The mannequin is wearing a Filipinana inspired dress. I purposely used women's traditional clothing because women are much more likely to be targets of harassment, especially since Duterte was elected. Filipino journalism is embedded in propaganda and has been since the beginning of its history. Media censorship hides the realities and horrors that go unseen in the country. This year the “Red Tagging movement” spread across the country like wildfire. People who are accused of supporting the New People’s Army are red-tagged. Getting red-tagged can subsequently get you killed and a staggering amount of those tagged were activists and journalists. The salakot (rice hat) is decorated with red tags. I want to show the dangers and history of Filipino journalism.
