It wasn’t until this year I proudly identified as a lesbian. Before then I called myself bisexual. Fast forward a few months prior, Velma from Scooby Doo was confirmed to be a lesbian. It wasn’t until I saw the backlash that I learned about compulsory heterosexuality. Compulsory heterosexuality, or comphet, is a theory that non-men assume they are straight due to societal pressures promoted by a patriarchal and heteronormative culture. Twitter users dubbed a lesbian who has never dated a man before to be a “gold star lesbian.” I drew 2 girls, one towering over the other to show her superiority complex. The other girl, sits on broken hearts of her previous male dates before her lesbian realization. This is supposed to represent the harmful elitism in the lesbian community. Finding your true sexuality shouldn’t be a competition.
